In order to stay focused on our mission to preserve life, improve health and promote safety, the department developed a business plan that promotes the following goals:
Enhance EMS’ ability to assess customer service satisfaction, maintaining at least a ninety percent customer satisfaction rating by providing caring, competent, and appropriate service.
Respond to life threatening calls within recommended time limits.
Tie continuing education training, clinical protocol development and the oversight of clinical care directly to patient outcomes, patient expectations, and patient perception of care.
Enhance the EMS system’s ability to recruit and retain a high quality and diverse workforce.
Make safety improvements to reduce employee injuries and lost time injury rate.
Increase revenues through improvements in billing processes.
Provide leadership and management development to increase professional capabilities.
The Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services Department provides emergency medical services for all residents of the City of Austin and TravisCounty. As an all Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider, the department has almost 400 state-licensed paramedics. Over 30 paramedic ambulances are dispatched from various stations and locations throughout the service area. These paramedic units are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Austin-Travis County EMS recently underwent an extensive reorganization to position the department to improve performance, increase accountabilityand prepare to meet future challenges.

Austin-TravisCountyEMS and the AustinIndependentSchool District collaborated to hold Emergency Medical Technician classes at three AISD campuses during the 2007-2008 school year.
ATCEMS is actively involved in advancing the capability of the State of Texas to respond to major and catastrophic events. ATCEMS provides ambulance strike teams, urban search and rescue teams, incident management personnel and mobile communications support to multiple regional disasters as members of the following groups:
ATCEMS continued its successful early-hire cadet program in partnership with AustinCommunity College. The department hired six students in their fourth semester of their paramedic education at ACC.
FY 2008 was a challenging year for A/TCEMS in terms of its overall budget, yet it also presented an opportunity to demonstrate resourcefulness, resolve and sound financial management.
