ATCEMS Paramedics and Command Staff Get Hands-On Training for Mobile Disaster Relief Activation PDF Print E-mail

On Thursday July 22, a group of eight ATCEMS paramedics will participate in DMR Training, that is Disaster Mobile Relief Training, where they will gain hands-on experience erecting two pop-up mobile shelters including AC and heat, hot water, portable generators, emergency lighting, and bedding necessary to activate a triage system, a mobile hospital, or a hazardous materials decontamination site.

ATCEMS Has Pivotal Role In Hurricane Alex Deployments and Operational Readiness PDF Print E-mail

As Hurricane Alex makes a decision as to where he will make landfall somewhere between northern Mexico and far south Texas, Austin-Travis County EMS personnel have taken up positions to provide for the safety of any potential storm victims. Hurricane Alex is the first named storm of the 2010 hurricane season.

On Monday afternoon, ATCEMS deployed seven rescue personnel as part of a larger TEEX and Texas Task Force 1 deployment, to a forward position in Weslaco, Texas. TEEX, the Texas Engineering and Extension Service, is a member of the Texas A&M University System. Texas Task Force 1 is both a state and national group of specialists established to provide urban search and rescue expertise, and the first ever swift water rescue strike team.

In the outside of the road closure barricades near 6th and San Jacinto, paramedics had no problem getting to a woman who had fallen ill Wednesday afternoon, even with a not-so-easy-to-manuever ambulance. There was not even a problem when the next call took paramedics to this man right across the street on foot. Both people were O.K.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest kills over 400,000 people in the United States every year.  In Texas alone, 70 people die from cardiac arrest each day.  When a community intervenes, we can change the outcome of this common and deadly event.  Survival rates triple when bystanders call 911 and start chest compressions right away.   If defibrillators (AED's) are available in public places, survival rates can double.  Our community, your community can make a big difference before a fire truck or an ambulance arrives on scene.
